The Para Los Ninos Family Learning complex was located in an existing mixed-use facility housing a toddler and preschool programs along side residential live/work lofts. The 28,000 square foot live-work loft was converted to a K-6 elementary school program and clinic space consisting of classrooms, library, administration offices and food services. The existing parking area was reconfigured for recreation, lunch areas and parking. Key to the success of the project was to unify the facility and bring a warm, friendly and creative environment to serve the children and their families of the community. The exposure of existing brick walls and wood beams and columns contrasted by rich paneling and new plaster walls created the warmth needed to leave the harsh outside environment at the door.

05-010.2- Consisting of a decomposed granite track, re-locatable bleachers for various team sports and permanent playground equipment made of recycled materials. The Para Los Niños playground was made possible by grants and donations made to the school after work on the main facility was completed. TFO Architecture worked together with the contractor to complete the design build project in time for the beginning of the Fall 2007 school year. The focus of the playground is the multi-use court at the center of the 1/16th mile track, which was designed with striping for volleyball, basketball and soccer games. Other features of the playground include a handball court, a shaded structure and seating as well as new landscaped edges to soften the mostly urban context.
